Assisted Living vs Memory Care

Assisted Living versus Memory Care, which is right for you or your loved one? This can be a tough decision, particularly with the emotions surrounding memory loss due to age or a degenerative neurological disease like Alzheimer’s or dementia. Traditions at Brookside is here to help you navigate these difficult decisions.

Is Assisted Living Right For Me or My Loved One?

Enjoy the people, places, and things you've always loved with the peace of mind from knowing our licensed nursing staff is on-site 24 hours a day*.

If you’re considering Assisted Living in a senior living community, start by determining whether Assisted Living is a good fit for you or your loved one.

Questions To Ask Yourself About Assisted Living

A few key questions can help you understand if Assisted Living at a Traditions senior living community is right for your loved one. Can you confidently maintain all your daily activities independently, or do you require assistance? Consider not only basic meal prep, getting the mail, and taking a walk, but also thoughtfully consider seasonal conditions. Can you stay safe and cool in the summer? Can you clear your driveway in the winter?

Questions To Consider As You Begin Your Assisted Living Journey:

  • Do I like having a nursing staff member available 24 hours a day?
  • Do I need some help with dressing, bathing, or hygiene?
  • Do I need or would like to have someone manage my medications? (order, obtain, administer)
  • Do I need someone to help coordinate appointments and transportation?
  • Am I beginning to feel lonely?
  • Do I miss socializing with friends and having easy access to things I love, such as attending church?
  • Do I enjoy having access to restaurant-style meals without the fuss of cooking or cleaning up?

Is Memory Care Right for Me or a Loved One?

Each senior in our care has a unique life story, which is very important to how we care for them. The Varietas® Memory Care Program  relies on what we learn about your loved one to comfort and connect with them in a warm and nurturing environment.

If you’re considering Memory Care in a senior living community for your loved one, start by considering if Memory Care is a good fit for your loved one at this time.

Questions To Ask Yourself About Memory Care

Look for signs of short-term memory loss, such as missing medication, doctor appointments, social engagements, birthdays, or other things they would usually recall. Are they misplacing items like their phone, television remote, magazines, or books? Are they having difficulty communicating their needs or wants? Are they wandering? Are they experiencing sundowning, where they are confused between day and night? These are all  signs of dementia or Alzheimer’s  and should be addressed early.

Questions To Consider As You Begin Your Memory Care Journey:

  • Does my loved one have a better day when there is structure to the day?
  • Does my loved one require more oversight, assistance, or direction while dressing, bathing, and hygiene?
  • Do I fear my loved one leaving their home alone or unsafely?
  • Does my loved one have difficulty deciding what to do on a normal day?
